Ensure Security in Microsoft Teams Calls with End-to-end Encryption

End-to-end encryption for 1:1 Microsoft Teams calls

Microsoft announced that end-to end encryption (E2EE) is now generally available for Microsoft Teams calls in order to strengthen phone security. Therefore, IT admins now have the option to enable and control the feature for their organization. This encryption in Teams calls is available on the latest version of the Teams desktop for Windows or Mac.

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) in Teams

When both parties in a 1:1 VoIP call turn on E2EE, the communication between them in the call is encrypted from end-to-end. No other party, including Microsoft, has access to the decrypted conversation. Both parties must turn on this setting to enable end-to-end encryption.

As a reminder, by default end-to-end encryption will not be available to all users within the tenant. Therefore, once IT has configured the policy and enabled it for selected users, those users will still need to turn on E2EE in their Teams settings. IT retains the ability to disable E2EE for one-to-one Teams calls as necessary.

When using E2EE for Teams 1:1 calls, certain features listed below will be unavailable. If these features are needed for a call, the user can go into their settings and turn E2EE off the same way it was turned on.

      • Recording
      • Call transfer (blind, safe, and consult)
      • Live caption and transcription
      • Call Park
      • Call Merge
      • Add participant to make the one-to-one call a group call
      • Call Companion and transfer to another device

Certainly, with this security boost in Microsoft Teams Phone System, now end-users and organizations can protect their sensitive conversations through different business scenarios.
