What is Microsoft Teams Direct Routing?

Microsoft Teams is one of the fastest growing collaboration tools in the world with over 145 million daily active users. Its phone capabilities have been strengthened and evolved by integrating solutions such as Calling Plans and Teams Direct Routing, allowing business to adopt innovative technology for communicating.

Direct Routing allows users to make, receive and manage calls on any device, without leaving their Microsoft Teams environment. Organizations can use their existing telecommunications providers by directly connecting their Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunks to Microsoft Teams. This allows them to:

  • Use virtually any PSTN trunk with Microsoft Phone System.
  • Configure a hybrid backend, such as a third-party private branch exchange (PBX), analog devices, and Microsoft Phone System.

By default, Teams don’t have any capability to make and receive PSTN calls, so you must enable this by adding a Microsoft Phone System license with your third-party provider’s help (like BlueSky UC).

How does Microsoft Teams Direct Routing works?

How do I know if Direct Routing is the best for my organization?

This phone technology might be the best for your organization if:

  • Microsoft Calling Plans are not available in your country
  • Your organization requires connection to third-party analog devices or call centers.
  • Your organization has an existing contract with a PSTN carrier.

Also, if your business’ actual focus is cost-effectiveness, Direct Routing compared to PSTN connections offers better pricing as you only pay for the number of current calls needed. By having lower calling charges in a flexible model, you can save between 25% and 40% iofyour monthly usage spend.

Licensing and requirements

To successfully deploy Direct Routing, your company must have the following licenses assigned in Microsoft 365:

  • Microsoft Phone System
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Microsoft Audio Conferencing

Leverage Direct Routing for MS Teams
